HEAD OF SCHOOL
I am delighted to welcome you to Udine International School. I hope to convey the passion and enthusiasm that makes Udine International School such a wonderful place to learn. Having opened our doors with 100 students in 2003, we now have over 260 boys and girls across the full range of classes from two years through to the end of Middle School.
The Udine International School believes in outstanding holistic education. We have a strong focus on student-centred and inquiry-based learning. I am very proud of the exceptional school and we engage our students in multiple approaches to learning to meet the needs of all our students.
At Udine International School, students are encouraged to participate in an extensive array of opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. Our diverse staff will be equipped to ensure that students are challenged and their individual needs are met. Students will leave Udine International School accomplished with academic skills and life skills to prepare them for the journey ahead.
This year we will be introducing Visual Multilayer Thinking. By using a non-linear, visual approach to thinking and communication, the more creative aspects of the brain are unlocked. The extra activity engages the brain in ‘dual processing’: a state of “busyness” that stops one from being over analytical and, ironically, helps those who are easily distracted to focus. This approach provides a way for people to move beyond the limitations that they imposed on themselves, or have had imposed on them, “getting out of their own way” to open new doors in thinking and creating.
At Udine International School we use what has been coined the “Singapore approach to teaching mathematics”. This approach develops a conceptual understanding and enjoyment of mathematics that is rooted in the following fundamentals:
- CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract)
- Rich discussion and peer talk – children discovering for themselves
- Multiple methods to achieve the same outcome
- Exploration not instruction
- Fluency as well as reasoning and explaining. It focuses on creating mathematicians who understand concepts not just procedures
- Spiral curriculum which builds from one lesson to the next as well as one concept to the next, revising the key essentials along the way.
Udine International School is a challenging, yet exhilarating place to learn. I am very excited for the year ahead and look forward to you joining me in this beautiful city of Udine!
